There is an exception to this: Typically municipalities have limits of how long you can camp. This is is often 2 days to 30 days in one spot or on one parcel of land. In the city I live in, you are legally not allowed to camp at all unless FEMA has declared a state of emergency. In most places they can stop you. They can also fine you, run a bulldozer through your house to destroy it, or deny you utilities like they did to me read about it here. All of which they legally can do, have done and you have no recourse for. This is a big myth perpetrated by those who want to make a quick buck of tiny house people. It is true that having a tiny house on wheels will help things generally because it confuses the bureaucrats, you can move it so easily, etc. But the truth is that the second you dwell in it, all bets are off and the city can do what they want.

Tiny houses don’t work everywhere, and finding parcels to build where the pocket developments like the one in Varna meet zoning laws, including setback and lot-size regulations, can be difficult.
January 22, Campskunk , How Tos 11 Comments First off, I don’t even HAVE a house, so this is for those of you who still have sticks and brick attachments, or are visiting folks who do. Houses have connections that come in handy for us RVers staying at a residence, and I’m not talking about the electricity and water. I’m talking about sewer connections you can dump your waste water tanks into.
City sewer connections have what’s called a clean-out, which is a large opening into the sewer line just as it leaves the house and heads toward the city sewer connection. It’s perfect for dumping your gray and black water tank contents if you don’t want to drive across town and give people money, which is usually what you have to do when dumping in a populated area.
The trick, however, is to find this clean-out, because few homeowners know where they are. In houses with connections to a municipal sewage treatment system, the sewer line comes out from under the house and usually makes a bee-line for the street where the sewer lines are. If you’re in the middle of the block this is easy — corner lots could go either way.

A compost toilet is a more environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional flush toilet. Most systems separate the liquid and solid human waste into two containers. The solid bin contains the compost mixture and can be left for months at a time with no unpleasant odor. The liquid container needs emptied more frequently. The container usually unclips and slides out, and can be easily carried using a handle.
By separating the two types of waste, the compost can form more easily. It also prevents unwanted odors.
Tiny House Plumbing The Research Phase
The SolMan Portable Solar Generator Perhaps one my favorite things about our tiny house other than falling asleep to the sound of rain on a steel roof is that it is entirely off grid. Part of this tiny house experiment has always been about learning to lessen our own impact. No water lines or sewage system. Park County, Colorado gets an average of sunny days each year, so solar power was an obvious choice for our electric needs.
Tent trailers with a standard RV sewer connection Today many of the larger model tent trailers come with a standard 3” sewer connection. Unfortunately, most of these connections are too low to the ground to hook up to a wheeled tote.
Below is a small portion of the information discussed. Tankless — A Few Things to Consider Tankless water heaters tend the be more efficient as the water is heated only when needed. Tankless vary in their heating capability re: Many of our solar customers choose to go with a propane RV water heater to conserve electricity. In an effort to conserve energy, she switches her water heater on before showering and switches it off immediately after.

Propane Water Heaters Propane water heaters require propane tanks to be stored on the exterior of your Tumbleweed. The major advantages of this water heater, aside from its ability to heat water in five to ten seconds, is that it provides 80 degrees of temperature rise and has an internal function that prevents freezing more on that below. Venting to the outside means that some piping will be exposed to freezing temperatures.
The water inside the pipes can cause the pipes to burst if frozen. This particular problem is usually not covered by the warranty. The Precision Temp propane water heater has a built in thermometer available optionally , triggering the unit to fire up when the temperature falls below freezing.

Every once in awhile, you have to get rid of it and make room for more. In our seminars, we hear more wild stories about sewage than anything else. Nearly all admit they learned how from a friend. This is required if you have a rear toilet and your black tank is mounted mid-way in the coach. The rear-bath-floorplan is becoming more common. Your RV sewage system is not like that home septic-tank system in operation—only in theory.
Most RV toilets flush straight down—a direct drop into the black tank, i.

We want to be as informative as possible, so in the following article we provide as much info as we can about everything related to tiny house toilets. This includes using and cleaning the discussed models of toilets. While some make crazy assumptions, most have no clue what the options are for tiny house owners. There are three major categories to choose from. Incinerating toilet As it sounds, this takes deposits and turns them into ash via an internal incinerator.
During the process, it eliminates all pathogens. Typically, these are powered by gas, electricity, or dried waste. Due to all of this burning action going on, these units require a significant sized ventilation system, which we see as one downfall. You can have the most advanced exhaust system installed, but we still have doubts that there will be no odor remaining form burning human waste.
One last item of note is the maintenance. These typically use little to no water. Waste is mixed with a decomposing agent like sawdust, cocoanut, or peat moss.

January 15, Laura H P Great information! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. The ones I see are always inside the house usually in a closet, basement, or crawlspace. Dan Odell I agree with Brad However, at my house in upstate New York, the sewer line clean out is inside under the basement stairs. Campskunk thanks, dan and brad — i had the feeling things were different up North.

Those designed for chemical filtration affect the quality of the water flowing through or over it. As for mechanical filtration, it’s a process used mainly to sieve water of large undissolved floating particles. Notice the word ‘mainly’ in all three forms of filtration described above, as all incorporate the other forms of filtration to some lesser degree. Before going further, one of the most misunderstood terminologies associated with filtration equipment is ‘Turnover rate!
One thing for sure is that flow rate, without using mathematical equations is more guesswork than an accurate statement. More on this when you read about protein skimmers!

You want to be like those folks on HGTV and live in a little box with fold-down tables, reclaimed wood, and composting toilets? Are you sure you want that and not just a two-bedroom bungalow or apartment or condo? Are you sure you know what goes into buying a tiny home besides, you know, the home? Unsurprisingly, it’s a bit more complicated than just buying a small, custom-built cabin or trailer and turning the key.
Building a tiny house costs $ a square foot, Apartment Therapy cost for a standard-sized home? About $ a square foot. There are a lot of design considerations in a tiny space that simply don’t exist in a large space.
You can park it almost anywhere it will fit for at least a little while ha! Parking and living in a tiny house… Legally… very few places so far. Where to live is the one major sticking point understandably that prevents a lot of people from choosing tiny. It is a big investment to take for limited security. Legalities… So, here is how tiny houses are viewed by the legal entities: If you are registered as a mobile home you can live full time in a mobile home park legally or in any zone that allows mobile homes a lot of downtown districts surprisingly are not anti mobile home.
The caveat here is that sometimes the mobile home parks require that the home be built by a licensed manufacturer for safety reasons understandable , not always but sometimes. That is a sticky point if you are a DIY tiny houser. If this is the path that makes sense for you I would encourage you to have the conversation with potential locations prior to starting construction. This option typically has higher registration and permitting fees as well as taxation. If you are registered as an RV then you are legally allowed to live in RV parks.
If this is the route you are going and you are having someone else build your tiny home ask them if they are certified.
